Elderly women who exercise regularly in their ladies running clothing have a life expectancy that is almost four years higher than their inactive peers, researchers have claimed.

Scientists from Germany analysed the stamina of more than 600,000 marathon and half-marathon runners and asked them about their health and lifestyle habits.

The results of the study, published in the German Medical Association's official international science journal, found that elderly people are often faster than younger athletes.

They also revealed that older participants do not have to train any harder than their younger rivals to maintain their fitness.

Back in October, Lisa Milbrand wrote in a piece for Arthritis Today Magazine that elderly people considering joining a gym should try out a few different fitness centres before signing a contract at one of them.

She said that these people should make sure that they are entirely comfortable with the gym they choose - from the changing facilities to the other clientele.
