Women suffering from acute plantar fasciitis can improve their symptoms through donning their ladies fitness clothing and completing a series of stretching exercises, a study has suggested.

Published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the study reveals that manual plantar fasciitis stretching exercises are more effective than shockwave therapy for patients with this form of heel pain.

Study author Dr John Furia, an orthopaedic surgeon in Pennsylvania, said that those who develop plantar fascia pain should start non-operative treatment as soon as possible.

"The earlier you understand how stretching fits in, and the earlier you learn how frequently to perform the simple plantar stretch, the less likely you will require a more invasive treatment method," he explained.

A study published in the November issue of the journal Pain reveals that those suffering from another painful condition - fibromyalgia - can relieve their symptoms by taking part in yoga sessions.
