Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips has been appointed as a 'dance tsar' by the government in a bid to help Brits get fit.

She will be encouraging people from across the nation to slip on their gym clothes and dancing shoes and boogie their way to better health rather than slobbing on the sofa.

The Department of Health has confirmed Arlene's appointment as part of its Let's Get Moving campaign and added that she will be joined in her efforts by former stars of the hit BBC show such as model Lisa Snowdon and Angela Rippon.

Speaking about the health benefits of dancing, Arlene told the Mirror: "It's a wonderful, fun exercise that keeps me fit and healthy. I want to encourage others to join in my passion."

Andy Burnham, health minister, today set out plans for a fitter England after highlighting that Britain is in 21st place in Europe when levels of physical activity are compared.
