Women who don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in yoga are more likely to notice an improvement in their mood than those who do other forms of exercise, a study has suggested.
Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) discovered an association between yoga postures, increased brain gamma-aminobutyric (GABA) levels and decreased anxiety.
One group of study participants practiced yoga three times a week for one hour, while the remaining subjects walked for the same period of time.
After 12 weeks, those who took part in the yoga sessions reported a more significant decrease in anxiety and greater improvements in mood than those who were in the walking group.
"Over time, positive changes in these reports were associated with climbing GABA levels," said lead author Dr Chris Streeter, an associate professor of psychiatry and neurology at BUSM.
Earlier this month, Dr Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, of Ohio State University College of Medicine, claimed that exercise lessens negative emotions, which could then reduce the incidence and progression of a number of age-related diseases.
