A study is currently being carried out to determine how much exercise women should do in their ladies fitness clothing when they are pregnant.
The research is being carried out at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore, US,and involves around 60 women in their third trimester of pregnancy.
Researchers are studying how exercise using treadmills impacts on the development of foetuses.
"We do know that not only can exercise be done, it should be done," said Dr Andrew Satin, professor and vice chairman of the department of gynaecology and obstetrics for the Hopkins School of Medicine.
He went on to suggest that personalised workout schedules should be developed to ensure that each woman does an amount of exercise that is right for them.
Last month, researchers at St Michael's Hospital in Canada suggested that Nintendo's Wii Fit game could help to manage gestational diabetes, which occurs in between two and nine per cent of pregnancies.
