People can ward off diabetes by donning their ladies fitness clothing and taking a greater number of steps each day, a study published by the British Medical Journal has suggested.
Scientists from the Murdoch Childrens Research Institute, who conducted the study in Melbourne, Australia, looked at the effects of long-term changes in daily step count on insulin sensitivity.
Some 592 middle-aged adults took part in the study and it was found that a higher daily step count over five years was associated with not only better insulin sensitivity, but a lower body mass index and lower waist to hip ratio.
"These findings, confirming an independent beneficial role of higher daily step count on body mass index, waist to hip ratio and insulin sensitivity, provide further support to promote higher physical activity levels among middle aged adults," the authors of the study conclude.
Earlier this month, the West Sussex County Times reported that Horsham District Council was urging its residents to don their gym clothing and take part in its scheduled Health Walks.
