Team sports 'motivate more than solo activities'

03 March 2010 15:46

Women who have lost motivation to don their gym wear and keep fit should try becoming part of a group, new research in the US has suggested.

Researchers employed a system, known as EatWell, which encouraged users to share audio recordings via mobile phones of how they had overcome the temptation to give up eating well or exercise.

Rich Leigh, weight loss expert and founder of fatfreefitness.co.uk, agrees that exercising with others, rather than alone, can provide more motivation: "Finding a gym partner seems to work wonders."

He went on to say that the "camaraderie of group training and reaching pre-set goals together, along with the ability to form friendships with likeminded individuals" is what seems to keep people motivated to don their gym wear and exercise.

Mr Leigh explained that it is important for people to find an activity that they enjoy and will not get bored of.

He suggested team sports or individual pursuits such as climbing as good activities to take part in to achieve those weight loss goals.
