Teenage girls who exercise regularly, perhaps in their gym clothing, have more control over their appetite than their less physically active peers, a study has shown.

Researchers from the University of Granada found that active adolescents aged between 12 and 17 had increased levels of insulin and leptin.

These hormones are involved in appetite control and energy expenditure, or the rate of metabolism.

Unsurprisingly, those who exercised regularly were also found to have lower levels of body fat than their sedentary friends.

The researchers looked at a sample of 3,800 European adolescents using the same methods used in a larger study called Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescents.

This is funded by the European Union and was developed in ten cities from nine European countries.

Earlier this month, researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Arthur G James Cancer Hospital and the Richard J Solove Research Institute found that leptin not only controls appetite, but also curbs cancer growth.
