Over a third of pregnant women think they cannot don their ladies fitness wear and start exercising if they were not active before pregnancy, according to a recent poll on pregnancy myths.
The survey, of more than 1,200 women, was carried out by the charity Tommy's and Johnson's Baby.
Tommy's midwife Sharon Broad rubbished the myth: "Pregnancy can be an excellent reason to start exercising. Although it's important to start off slowly, exercise will help your body to be in the best possible shape to cope with labour and giving birth," she said.
The NHS recommends that women exercise throughout pregnancy, saying it can help boost energy levels and the immune system and highlighting yoga as a particularly good form of activity because of the breathing techniques learnt.
Yoga in comfortable bamboo yoga wear improves posture, which helps with back pain and can increase flexibility and make birthing easier.
