Triathlete Mark Pringle dies from head injuries

01 September 2009 11:21

Australian triathlon pioneer Mark Pringle has died from his injuries following an accident while out cycling in Abu Dhabi.

The 50-year-old is thought to have been hit by a passing vehicle while out on a training cycle near his home in July.

Doctors had initially given him just 24-hours to live, but Pringle survived in his medically-induced coma for far longer following the incident.

He eventually succumbed to his head injuries at Mafraq Hospital this weekend.

Pringle won 33 triathlons throughout his career, taking part in more than 300 races throughout his career.

Speaking to The National, wife Jennifer Pringle said: "His peak physical condition is the thing which helped him fight for this long.

"Mark died doing something he loved. In his professional career he won many races but he never lost the love of cycling as a hobby and he loved teaching others."

Pringle had been coaching at the Al Raha International School in Abu Dhabi, where he moved to a year ago.
