Companies in America are using an activity monitoring gadget to persuade employees to don their ladies fitness wear and exercise more.
The small Philips device, called the Activity Monitor, can be worn like a pendant around the neck or placed in clothing pockets.
Activity Monitor measures exercise intensity and combines this with the wearer's age, gender, height and weight, all of this information is relayed back to a computer where the number of calories burned is calculated.
Philips claims that DirectLife can reduce a company's health insurance costs as increasing employee activity levels can enhance their overall health and fitness.
According to Philips, at the start of a large trial with a Dutch ICT consultancy, nearly 50 per cent of participants were inactive according to the recommended level set by the US Center of Disease Control.
The inactive people that finished the program increased their physical activity level by ten per cent on average.
