The life expectancy of a southern Minnesotan town has been increased through a Vitality project, including exercise in ladies fitness wear, according to magazine AARP.
Blue Zones Vitality Project, sponsored by United Health Foundation, was designed to inspire residents to take charge of their health so that they can live longer.
More than 2,300 residents of Albert Lea used the Vitality Compass - an interactive online tool that helps measure an individual's projected life expectancy based on current behaviours.
At the end of the ten-month health makeover, which made important changes in the way residents ate, worked, exercised, and played, the life expectancy of the citizens of Albert Lea increased by an average of 3.1 years per person.
As part of the project, a major walking and biking trail was completed around Fountain Lake in the town to encourage female residents to don their women's fitness wear and make movement an everyday part of life.
Editor of AARP magazine Nancy Perry Graham said that Albert Lea was picked for a variety of reasons but priority was "enthusiasm and a passion for the project".
"They really rose to the occasion," she added.
