The motivation of regular exercise, possibly in ladies fitness wear, should be the desire to ward off fatal diseases, not vanity, according to a weight loss expert.
It was recently reported that some 5,000 members had been excluded from the dating site beautifulpeople.com because they had put on weight over Christmas.
Personal trainer Rich Leigh, founder and editor of fatfreefitness.co.uk, said that this was nothing but a public relations ploy to appeal to their target audience of "vain and self-centred singletons".
He went on to say that obesity is not an issue of aesthetic importance, but of health.
"Obesity leads to fatal disease, and by jumping on the appearance bandwagon in a bid to promote their service, beautifulpeople.com are simply pushing an agenda that loses sight of what is important," Mr Leigh added.
A recent report, from GlaxoSmithKline, found that 88 per cent of people do not know about the serious health problems that can be caused by hidden abdominal fat.
