A vegetarian diet can slow the ageing process, according to research from the Institute of Healthy Ageing at University College London.
The research suggests that the secret to a longer life span is limiting the consumption of methionine, an amino acid found in fish, meat and nuts.
A spokesperson from the Vegetarian Society, said: "A balanced vegetarian diet will supply all the essential nutrients you need to help keep you fit and healthy and also follows current healthy eating advice, which includes more fruit and vegetables in the diet."
Vegetarians are less likely to suffer from certain conditions, including obesity, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, she added.
According to the NHS, around five per cent of the UK population is vegetarian. These people can be just as healthy, if not healthier, than the general population.
They advise combining a balanced diet - be it vegetarian or not - with regular exercise, which could include jogging in ladies running wear, in order to improve health and fitness.
