Vigorous exercise 'reduces breast cancer risk'

Vigorous exercise 'reduces breast cancer risk'

04 October 2010 12:48

African-American women can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer if they don their ladies fitness clothing and take part in vigorous exercise for more than two hours per week, a study has suggested.

Researchers from Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in the US found that these women are 64 per cent less likely to develop the disease than women of the same race who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

The results of the researchers' work were presented at the Third American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities, held September 30th to October 3rd 2010.

"Being physically active can have benefits in other diseases that occur at high rates in African-American women, such as diabetes and hypertension," said lead researcher Dr Vanessa Sheppard, a cancer control scientist and assistant professor in the department of oncology at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Researchers from the University of Rhode Island recently suggested that those who exercise tend to be more satisfied with their lives.
