Women that struggle to bring themselves to attempt a particularly challenging position in their women's yoga clothing should imagine doing it first, it has been claimed.
Authors from Chicago and Arizona Universities published their claims in the Journal of Consumer Research, claiming that women can convince themselves to do something they are deterred from doing with more favourable evaluations of situations and behaviour.
They suggest that the normal approach is to infer something good or bad based on a bodily sensation.
However, the researchers note that "merely simulating physical approach resulted in a more favorable evaluation of the product".
They added: "These results suggest our aversions are derived in part from our bodily sensations, and the influence of these sensations may be more far reaching than one might have presumed."
This approach could be more beneficial for women than men, with recent research in the American Journal of Public Health indicating that women tend to do less exercise than the opposite sex.
