Women wanting to give both their mental and physical health a boost should don their ladies fitness wear and take up walking, Ramblers has claimed.

Maria Castellina, spokeswoman for the walking charity, said that older ladies thinking of taking up walking to improve their fitness should take it easy at first, by tackling flat surfaces, such as paths without a gradient.

She said that they can then move on to walking on more difficult and varied surfaces.

"Many people who have problems with their knees find that walking poles can make things easier, especially on rugged terrain," said Ms Castellina.

Her comments follow the publication of research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, which found that walking for 40 minutes a few times a week can improve memory in older adults.

Ms Castellina said studies have suggested that exercise such as walking can help to delay the onset of Alzheimer's.
