Walking at least six miles a week, perhaps in comfortable gym clothing, can preserve memory in old age, a study has suggested.
Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh found that regular walking protects the size of people's brains.
"Brain size shrinks in late adulthood, which can cause memory problems. Our results should encourage well-designed trials of physical exercise in older adults as a promising approach for preventing dementia and Alzheimer's disease," said study author Dr Kirk Erickson.
He went on to say that, if regular exercise in mid life can be proven to improve brain health later in life, it should be made a "public health imperative".
The study has been published in the October 13th online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
Back in July, researchers from Northwestern University in Illinois published study results, which revealed that the more women weigh, the worse their memory is.
Women who carry excess weight on their hips are more at risk of memory loss than those who carry it around their waist.
