Women who are not enthused by the idea of donning their ladies fitness wear and going out running may be interested to learn that walking briskly burns as many calories as jogging.
Marissa Stephenson, writing in a piece for health and fitness magazine Shape, explained that routes involving hills or stairs are the best for burning calories and getting the heart pumping.
She wrote that these also increase the "sculpting benefits for your butt and legs".
The magazine's fitness director, Jeanine Detz, said that the walk should not be leisurely but fast-paced and demanding.
"Always walk on a hilly circuit, which increases your calorie burn by up to 50 per cent," she added.
Fitness trainer to the stars James Duigan recently told the Daily Mirror that walking is one of the best exercises both for new mums and those who just do not like exercise, as it is not too strenuous but helps to burn excess fat.
