Walking to school 'offers exercise to both children and adults'

By walking their youngsters to school, parents might be able to improve their own personal fitness, an expert suggests.

Those who want to don their ladies fitness wear and get outdoors may want to take note of the views recently expressed by Alun Ffred Jones, the Welsh Assembly government's heritage minister.

He believes that both children and adults can benefit if they walk the daily school commute.

The politician commented: "Parents accompanying younger children to school will ... be nearer achieving the goal of adults getting at least 30 minutes of exercise five times a week."

Walking provides a simple form of exercise, he went on to say.

A number of schools in Wales have been taking part in Walk to School Week in recent days, which runs until today.

Earlier this month, Mr Jones also announced that further financial support is to be provided to the country's sports coaching sector in the near future.
