Watson 'heralds new era of British women's tennis'

18 September 2009 08:51

Heather Watson has followed in the footsteps of compatriot Laura Robson by winning a junior grand slam tennis title.

The Guernsey-born 17-year-old's triumph has led many pundits to venture some optimism about the future of British girls' tennis.

It may also encourage more women and girls to put on ladies fitness wear and start playing tennis in the UK.

Head of women's tennis coaching at the Lawn Tennis Association Nigel Sears said: "I'm so pleased for Heather, she's been a good player for a while and this win will really help her to believe that she has so much more success to come.

"She is a well-balanced player who anticipates well, has great footwork and a great instinct for the game."

Both Watson and Robson, the latter of whom went out in the semi-finals, are being heralded as the future of British women's tennis.

Robson famously claimed the Wimbledon junior title in the 2004 competition at age 14.
