Women that walk their dogs 'get more exercise than gym-goers'

30 November 2009 17:00

Women who don their ladies fitness wear and take their dogs out for walks get more exercise than those that have a gym membership, according to a global market research company.

Onepoll.com found that those without a dog spend an average of just one hour and 20 minutes a week exercising at the gym or heading out for a walk or jog in their ladies running wear.

Dog owners, on the other hand, exercise twice a day for an average of 24 minutes at a time when they take their pet for walks, which totals five hours and 38 minutes a week.

They also take their pets out on three long walks each week, which adds another two hours and 33 minutes to the total amount of exercise they do each week.

Bob Martin, a spokesperson for pet healthcare experts, said: ''Whilst going to the gym seems like a chore for many Brits, walking the dog can be a much more enjoyable way to get your daily exercise.

According to the NHS, walking is a great form of exercise and doing over 10,000 steps a day can improve health, burn calories and increase stamina.ADNFCR-2569-ID-19485429-ADNFCR
