Tabata fitness regime 'is brutal'

28 August 2009 18:22

Undertaking intensive Tabata training in women's gym clothing is "very brutal", according to personal trainer Dax Moy.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Mr Moy explained that the intensive training technique known as Tabata is hard work but will make a difference to fitness if done regularly.

The Tabata Protocol was developed off the back of research by Dr Izumi Tabata and others from the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo.

It is based on short bursts of exercise, lasting around four minutes, after which "you should feel as if you couldn't do another single exercise or repetition", Mr Moy explained.

"It will also improve your aerobic and anaerobic fitness because it is performed with effort and very little recovery time," he added.

Mr Moy added that it should manifest itself in improvements to body shape, fat levels and muscle tone over a short period of time.
